Defending Youth at the Intersection of Race & Disability [Zoom Webinar]

Hosted by Georgetown Law’s Juvenile Justice Clinic & Initiative, The Gault Center: Defenders of Youth Rights, and the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Gault Center.

Join us for a vital conversation on defending youth who are navigating the intersection of race and disability where ableism and systemic racism drive involvement and compound harm in the juvenile legal system.

Moderated by Professor Kristin Henning, Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law, this webinar will offer concrete litigation strategies for defending youth with a range of disabilities. Panelists include: Professor Hector Linares, who teaches the Youth Justice section of the Law Clinic and is the Director of Skills & Experiential Learning at Loyola University New Orleans College of Law; and Jessica Gingold, Senior Attorney on the civil rights team at Equip for Equality where she litigates and advocates for individuals with disabilities in prisons, jails, and who are victims of police abuse.

Defenders will learn how to:

• Advocate for the decriminalization of disabilities, especially when weaponized against youth of color
• Incorporate disability-informed approaches at every stage of the youth defense case
• Identify and challenge systemic discrimination
• Secure effective accommodations
• Leverage disability-related factors for case mitigation
